SPIT Lab is Open at the Biomarker Cluster

Forming a new Biomarker Cluster, Drs. Josh Snodgrass and Zachary DuBois from the department of Anthropology are teaming up with Dr. Birdie Shirtcliff to expand testing for a wide range of noninvasive and minimally invasive biomarkers.  Dr. Birdie is a Research Professor in the Center for Translational Neuroscience and department of psychology. Birdie, an alum from SSS/TRIO in 1998, received her PhD in biobehavioral health and investigates how stressful experiences can shape stress physiology and hormonal biomarkers.

The SPIT Lab possesses all the equipment necessary for enzyme immunoassays in a biosafety level II wet laboratory. Laboratory supplies for saliva, hair (including hair extraction equipment) or urinary assays. This laboratory also contains the LIAMTM reader, which is used to quantitate the near real-time salivary cortisol LFIA results. The services and corresponding rates for external clients are included below; however, extra charges may apply for rare or small-scale projects.

1. Hair Extraction: $50/sample

2. Cortisol Assay: $18.00/sample

3. Testosterone Assay: $20.00/sample

4. DHEA, Estradiol, & Progesterone Assay: $20.50/sample

5. Melatonin Assay: $41.30/sample

6. IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α (serum) Assay: $35.50/sample
